Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite!

December 17th, 2009

We all remember this endearment phrase that our parents used to tell us after tucking us in bed at night. The soft, comforting tone of her voice gently putting us to sleep yet unknowingly distracting us from the seriousness of these little critters.

Today and just recently with the huge bed bug outbreak going around throughout the nation, consumers and city officials alike are even more concerned with the extermination and prevention of these bugs.  How serious and concerning is this event?  So serious that it prompted Congress to pass H.R.2248 Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009.

Consumers who purchase used or refurbished mattresses need to realize they are putting themselves and their children at risk! You may save some money by buying a cheaper used or refurbished mattress, but the consequences that come as a result of an outbreak will cost you well in the thousands!

First and foremost, you will need to discard your infected mattress or mattresses if the outbreak has spread to more than one bedroom. In many occasions you will also need to discard your bedroom furniture as well; since bed bugs will travel from your mattress to other areas of your room/house. Finally, you will have to hire an exterminator who may need to treat your room or entire home more than once.

If you don’t have them now, then take the necessary steps to prevent such nightmare. You can do so by purchasing from legitimate mattress retailers who sell ONLY new mattresses and who have the proof to back that statement.  Also, protect your brand new mattress buy buying a mattress protector.  Don’t confuse a mattress protector with a mattress pad.  One is for comfort and protection against dust mites and spills, the latter is simply for comfort.

Back in September, I had a meeting with Jamie Hulbert an inspector from the Southern Nevada Health District. We were discussing training for our staff in regards to bed bug protection for our mattress store showrooms and warehouse here in Las Vegas. You can understand how important this is to us since we obviously have thousands of brand new mattresses and such an outbreak could potentially put us out of business. Just like any major mattress retailer, we sanitize our showroom mattresses on a daily basis and take precautionary steps in our warehouse and delivery trucks by also sanitizing them.

Jamie was telling me of her never ending quest to catch unscrupulous local mattress manufacturers who are illegally making mattresses for sale to consumers through various mattress and furniture retail stores here in Las Vegas. What makes them illegal is the fact that these local mattress manufacturers are going around picking up old discarded mattresses, taking them back to their warehouse where they simply change the outer mattress cover and labeling them as new or with fake law labels that contain invalid licensing information. As a result, you have these really inexpensive mattresses out there for sale that look “new” on the outside but have the same old worn out and many times infected parts inside.

Many consumers have no knowledge of all this and more importantly what’s inside the mattress.  The general advice I give to consumers is that if you see mattresses being sold for under $100, you really need to be extremely careful. Look at the law label on the mattress (located on the head side of the mattress).

A law label is a legally required tag or label placed on new items describing the fabric and other materials being used. Typically these tags begin with a phrase such as “This tag may not be removed under penalty of law except by the consumer”.  Some states require tags on used or refurbished bedding as well.

Laws requiring these tags were passed to inform consumers as to whether the product they were buying contained new or recycled materials. This was and still is considered important as contaminated, recycled stuffing material could contain lice, bedbugs, or human excretions.

If the mattress is refurbished it should have an orange label; however some illegitimate mattress makers use fake white labels to give consumers the impression that they are buying a new mattress when in fact they are not. (see picture of sample law label)

Write the name of the manufacturer, address, and Registry No. so that you can in fact confirm that this is a manufacturer of new mattresses by calling the appropriate State agency that regulates such manufacturer or click here to find contact information for the agency in your area.  You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to make sure you are not being taken by unscrupulous companies or individuals.

You can rest assure that our mattresses are of the highest quality and that we are constantly working with legitimate mattress suppliers for ways to offer quality products at the best pricing without sacrificing our integrity and without putting your health at risk.

Wow how interesting I did not think they were such a big deal. I guess I am lucky. I have had some bad beds and now that I know this I am shocked I have not had bed bugs (ewww). Makes me itch thinking about it…

    Hi Molly,

I feel the same way when I read articles or we have a discussion at the office/meetings about these little critters. I start to itch too! :p

Most of us are lucky to have never dealt with something like this. However, we should take precautions to avoid this from happening. The fact remains that all mattresses without bed bug/dust mite protection are prone to such attacks. Most people don’t realize how devastating this can be as it usually results in having to throw away the mattress (or mattresses if the bugs spread to other bedrooms) as well as all bedroom furniture, even the carpeting. Then you may need to have a professional extermination service come out to your home (sometimes you may need more than one service call) and finally you will have to replace your mattress, furniture, and other items that you had to discard. Needless to say, the cost would be in the thousands when it could have all been prevented by simply buying a mattress protector from day one.

We always advise our customers to make the extra investment. It’s worth it! Not only will you be protected but it also creates a healthy sleeping environment for you. After all, you can’t throw your mattress in the washer every week. A normal person sweats about a pint each night, sheds thousands of dead skin cells, and hundreds of dead hair follicles. Where does all this go? Into your mattress! Ever wonder why your mattress doubles in weight over time? Now you know! You wouldn’t wear the same dirty and sweaty shirt without washing day in and day out for months even years, right? If your mattress is not protected, you are sleeping on far worst conditions than you otherwise realize.

Look at our mattress protector options on our website at

There are many types out there but ours is THE only one that is classified as Class 1 Medical Device by the FDA. It is not only waterproof but also breathable so you don’t have to worry about it sleeping hot. The technology used on our mattress protectors make it a thin sheet that fits around your mattress like a fitted sheet. They are not made of heavy thick vinyl like others and can go on mattresses up to 18″ thick!

Protect yourself and your loved one! Jacqueline.

  3. Does anyone know why there seems to be such a huge price increase on natural talalay latex coming? Seem like they don’t know that our economy sucks and prices just keep going up. Must be the demand for these great latex mattresses.

  4. Jacqueline says:

Price increases are not usually a result of demand, although these mattresses are in fact becoming more and more popular! They are anti-microbial, repel dust mites, and sleep cool UNLIKE Tempur-pedic type mattresses (memory foam) that sleep warm and the memory foam is petroleum based thus giving off gases and well just not as healthy to sleep on.

Of course, people love the feeling of both so just like everyone else, we offer both options but we do inform our customers of the positive and negative of each mattress.
